What comes before thought/thinking

What is the ontological foundation of thought or thinking? Is there a pre-existing principle or foundation? As I have noted in earlier posts, Meillassoux’s After Finitude claims not only that there is, but also where it can be found: in the language of mathematics. There his ties with Badiou become indisputable. Most of my graduate career I have been a keen student of Ranciere’s thoughts about politics, aesthetics and epistemology. Ranciere’s position would oppose Meillassoux’s in that for the former there is no pre-existing principle or foundation for thought to come into being. I am not sure why I am comparing Ranciere and Meillassoux, but I suspect that it could be a productive exercise. More to come.
